Getting Started In The Furniture Business

If a person is interested in going into business on their own, there are countless types to choose from. Many people like the convenience of working from home. One great home business, provided a person has a separate space from their home, such as a garage, basement or workshop because of the chemicals, is a furniture builder and finisher. Of course the person would have to either take classes to learn this particular trade, unless they already have experience in it. There is not a lot that you need in order to get started, except for of course your wood and related supplies. There is a great deal of equipment that is needed in order for a person to start their own furniture building and finishing business. Of course every business needs the convenient office equipment, like computers, copy machines, fax machines, etc. But when you’ve got a business building and finishing furniture, there is a variety of shop-type equipment and supplies that you will need. You will need various types of saws, which includes different size blades. This will enable you to create different types of designs. You will also need a dependable drill as well as drill bits in order to bore holes into the wood so that you can assemble the furniture or place decorative hardware onto it.

Another piece of equipment that you would need for a successful business in furniture is a sander. You certainly can’t apply stain or finish to a rough piece of wood that hasn’t been sanded. The customer wouldn’t be too happy about this type of quality. The sander would allow you to sand the furniture after building it, which is part of the prepping process. The customer could request to have a piece of furniture distressed, and there are special tools used for this as well. After this step, you would either wipe or spray stain onto the furniture, using a spray gun. There are several types of spray guns, and they are used for the stain application to ensure that it goes on smoothly and evenly. Next, there is what is called a sealer gun, which is a special spray gun that is used to seal and apply top coat to the piece of furniture.

A person with their own business could probably really benefit from an accountant to handle all of their taxes, as well as a person to take care of payroll, should you grow to the point of needing to hire employees.

How to buy furniture and accessories direct to start a small business?
I have a few friends that have started businesses, one a rug and home accessory, and another a furniture business, I have always wanted to own a small furniture and home accent business and have gone to the market in High Point NC and Atlanta Georgia.Buying from the manufacturer is not cheap and the mark up would have to be ridiculas. You also have to make major purchases to carry most lines of furniture. I would be more interested in discontinued or floor samples. They both are very successful and are hush hush about where they get their merchandise. but I do know that they get it dirt cheap and they travel to pick everything up.I am more interested in sofas. Can anyone give me some ideas where to start.
    Thanks Rob B.

You might try joining an industry association, with which you could obtain a list of other members, including their specialty. I’m not sure which association but look for something similar to a furniture wholesalers association.

    Good luck!
